Being a customer led, family business, support to our local community is a fundamental part of our company values.
With most of our sites situated in small villages and towns we provide an essential hub to the local community. We feel this comes with the responsibility to further support our customers where possible and to ensure our community is at the heart of everything we do.
We have introduced several campaigns dedicated to raising money for local schools, leading charities and local community groups. Our ongoing work has contributed to non-profit organisations such as Age UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Home-Start Hampshire and Sway Welfare Aid Group (SWAG).
These campaigns are carried out across the entire company, from members of Head Office, to our employees in our stores. Our efforts include fundraising activities such as competitions, team building, quarterly raffles, cake stalls and participating in local events. We believe our contributions not only help our local community but also provide an enjoyable working environment for our employees.
In a bid to support local families and children we have allocated a donation fund that reaches out to local schools to help provide additional educational resources and food donations to tackle food insecurity throughout the pandemic. Those who have benefited from this fund are Hordle Primary School, Bartley COE Junior School, St. Luke’s COE Primary School and Stock COE Primary School.
In 2020, we launched our annual MacMillian Coffee Morning which is now organised by our amazing employees and hosted within our fuel stations.
We are committed to working in an environment where resources are valued, and our food waste is sufficiently reduced. From evaluating and optimising our work processes and supply channels, to collaborating with others who can utilise resources we cannot, we aim to reach zero food waste.
In 2019 we introduced site KPIs where we targeted waste to be no more the 0.5 percent of sales.
In late 2021, we joined the national food waste movement app, Too Good to Go to further support the reduction in our waste. This online app encourages customers to purchase a range of surplus grocery items from our shops. This is not only an innovative way to reduce waste, but it also contributes to reducing our carbon footprint. To date, we have saved over 450 bags of waste which is equivalent to saving 1.13 tonnes of CO2e!
Following our commitments, and the hard work of our store managers we have significantly reduced our waste by 54% each year.
We work closely with a local resident, Pam Hodgson, to help provide warm, nutritional meals for the homeless, vulnerable, and families suffering financial difficulty via FreeMyMeal. In early 2022, Pam reached out to us with her plans to volunteer her cooking services for the organisation. In support, we have since committed to donating £10 per day of surplus items which is then prepared, cooked and delivered by Pam to locals in need.
At PBFS we take a proactive and assertive approach in our commitments to building programmatic Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies. It is important to our staff and customers that we provide an ethical workplace, reduce our carbon footprint where possible and to put our community at the heart of everything we do.

We continuously donate to local food banks such as Trussel Trust, Romsey Food Bank and New Forest Basics Bank As part of our COVID-19 response, we launched a home delivery service, reaching local elderly and vulnerable customers. During this time, we also put together several bags of free food essentials to be collected by local families suffering financial difficulty. In 2020, we became part of the movement to ban disposable barbeques in the New Forest which supports The New Forest National Park Authority in their bid to keep the forests and landscapes safe.
